syndex

Syndex is a minimal, highly customisable digital mood board geared towards curators, archivists, image collectors and the creative community. It's aesthetics are based on sites such as Haw-Lin, AAA-Feed and The Black Guido, amongst many others, but adds search and auto curation via the use of Tumblr's tag feature.

FAQ Me
  • You:  I can't get my Ask button / Submit Button to show.
  • Me:  You have to set it to show first in your "Blog Settings", not your "Appearance Options"
  • You:  Infinite scroll does not work on iPad/iPhone
  • Me:  I had to curb infinite scrolling on iPad as it will crash Safari if too many gifs, videos and images load. Sorry.
  • You:  How can i add comments?
  • Me:  Not possible unless you know HTML/CSS. I'll probably add this at a later stage.
  • You:  My Reblog / Like / Permalink / Plus options are not showing anymore when i hover over the images?
  • Me:  You either clicked "Antisocial" on, or cleared the images at "Post Options" and "Post Options Hover" in the Appearance options (Customise theme). If the latter was the case, you'll have to reupload the images for that, go here http://static.tumblr.com/bfhsl6l/OH4m3mhc3/all-hover.png and here http://static.tumblr.com/bfhsl6l/A2Fm3mleg/all.png, drag the images to your desktop, and then reupload them in those two options.
  • You:  How can I tip you for all the hard work you done?
  • Me:  You're so kind! You know you will be the 17th person in +186,000 Syndex theme users to have done it? My tip jar is at http://syndex.me/help Thank You!
  • You:  Who are these amazing people who donate to you?
  • Me:  You can find them listed here: http://syndex.me/nice-people
  • You:  I don't want my avatar to show in the about page.
  • Me:  Go to Customise Appearance, then to Edit HTML, and search for: <img src="{PortraitURL-128}" width="128" height="128" title="{Title}" alt="{Title}" /><br />. Found it? Delete it!
  • You:  I need to set my click-through link / credit the source etc.
  • Me:  I get asked this all the time, I dont understand, 'source', 'via' and permalink pages are all very much available, just click on the "+" sign to see "Source" and "Via", click on the permalink link icon to go see the entire photo set and again, the "Source" and "Via" is there too. Am I missing something here? If so, please msg me! I know a lot of people want to click straight through to the source when clicking on the image, or sometimes people want clicking through to the permalink page. My goal is to get the most of the images on the site without having to click through to a new page. Personally i'd rather see the image really huge, really quickly, and continue scrolling. But seriously, all images are credited, in Permalink page and the Index page. Thanks.
  • You:  Help! My infinite scroll isn't working?
  • Me:  I've seen this happen only a few times on my tumblr over the last 3 months. If it happens, just clear your broswer cache or restart your browser, it should come back. Not sure why this happens.
  • You:  When I had a text post, there's a big grey square with the title of the post on it (representing the post). Is there a way to substitute this grey square by a picture ?
  • Me:  Try "BG Text Quote Chat Link" in Appearance Options.
  • You:  I have no Description for my Blog but the "About" link still shows on my Tumblr and it just goes to a black page?
  • Me:  Switch on "No Description" in the appearance options.
  • You:  How do i get my logo further up to the top of the page?
  • Me:  Try tweak "Margin top of Index"
  • You:  How do I add my external link, Facebook link, Twitter link, etc to the nav?
  • Me:  In appearance options, enter the title of the link (i.e Twitter) in "Link 1 Title", give the URL of the link (i.e https://twitter.com/marckremers) into "Link 1 URL". There are a total of 5 external links you can add.
  • You:  How do i change the colour of the Text/Chat/Link Posts?
  • Me:  "BG ChatLinkQuoteText Index" It's the first appearance option in the list.
  • You:  How do I change the colour of the logo?
  • Me:  "Text Logo" in the Appearance Options.
  • You:  Is there a way I can stop the quotes from being shortened?
  • Me:  No. It's too long. I have to standardise the look of the theme else it'll just be a big messy soup. Sorry.
  • You:  Can I have captions under my Images?
  • Me:  Nope, never. It won't be 'Syndex' then.
  • You:  How can I make all my image the same height?
  • Me:  Set "Size Photo H Max" and "Size Photo W Max" to a low value, like say 400px.
  • You:  Where can I install the theme?
  • Me:  http://www.tumblr.com/theme/34366
  • You:  How can I make this a [insert number here] column layout?
  • Me:  This theme does not have columns, it's based on the size of your posts and your browser.
  • You:  My text posts, say "Text Post" and/or my Chat posts say "Chat Post", why?
  • Me:  You haven't given those posts a title. Title them so that they are more descriptive.
  • You:  Oh, can't I show the text in my post on the front page?
  • Me:  That will be very difficult, some people have essays as text posts, others use it just for images, there are too many variables involved to consider a perfect solution for 80,000 and counting syndex users. Remember, this is a theme primarily for image collectors, if you have more text chat or quote posts then images, i'd recommend using a theme that is more text based.
  • You:  How do I stop the logo from staying at the top of the page when I scroll?
  • Me:  This isn't possible, it's part of the look and feel of the site. You could experiment and give the logo a position: relative; in your custom CSS.
  • You:  Help! The follow button is not showing
  • Me:  This has been changed to show by default. Before, it was only displayed when users clicked on the plus sign to open the nav bar. You can still hide it in the nav bar by deselecting "Always show Tumblr button" in the appearance options.
  • You:  What does Syndex mean?
  • Me:  Syn = Synonym, Dex = Index.
  • You:  Can I have the Nav open by default?
  • Me:  Use if:Nav Bar Open By Default
  • You:  Can I have my logo centred?
  • Me:  Use if:Logo Position Centre
  • You:  How can I change the background?
  • Me:  Look at if:SiteBGimage, if:SiteBGimageFixedPosition, color:BG Site
  • You:  Can I have the text from my Text Post in the index page?
  • Me:  No, this would go against the style of the theme.
  • You:  Can I have the caption text visible beneath the Photo Post in the index page?
  • Me:  No, this would go against the style of the theme. Click on the "+" sign when you hover over the Audio/Video/Photo/Photoset post to see the caption. It's also present in the Permalink page of the post.
  • You:  How do I show all the photo set images on the Index page?
  • Me:  You can't, the results are to vertical and kills the look of the theme. You can see the entire photo set in the permalink page though.
  • You:  I want to use my logo which is an image.
  • Me:  Ok, use "image:LogoImage"
  • You:  I want to change the color of the audio player.
  • Me:  Due to issues with the Infinite scrolling feature clashing with this, I've only been able to offer one color. It is possible to change. You need to find and replace {AudioPlayerGrey} to {AudioPlayerBlack} in the Edit HTML area. You'll also need to do the same in the file syndex.js, to find this, search for 'syndex.js' in the edit HTML area, copy and past the script, find and replace, then reupload the file at http://www.tumblr.com/themes/upload_static_file, get the new file path, and replace the old path to syndex.js in the Edit HTML area.
  • You:  I need to do something special with "x", and there is no Appearance Option for it, how can I do it?
  • Me:  You need to find out what the id or class of the element you want to edit is. To do this, you have to right click the thing that you want to edit, when viewing your tumblr, and select "Inspect Element" (Chrome and Safari, other browsers may vary in terminology.) This will bring up an inspector, which should highlight the HTML markup attributed to the thing you want to change. Look for it's class or id name, i.e class="text_post" or id="posts". Then in the Customize Theme panel, scroll right down, open up "Advanced Options" and find the Custom CSS field. If you were to change the background colour of class="text_post", you would type in .text_post{background-color:blue !important} Put the "!important" in their just in case, which makes sure it's not being overridden by other CSS declarations.
